IMDB rating: 7.70 Plot: Max has lived a mundane life as a cab driver for twelve years. The faces have come and gone from his rear-view mirror: people and places he’s long since forgotten—until tonight. Vincent is a contract killer. When an off-shore narco-trafficking cartel learns that they’re about to be indicted by a federal grand jury, they mount an operation to identify and kill the key witness, and the last stage is tonight. It is on this very night that Vincent has arrived—and five bodies are supposed to fall. Circumstances cause Vincent to hijack Max’ taxicab, and Max becomes collateral—an expendable person who’s in the wrong place at the wrong time. Through the night, Vincent forces Max to drive him to each assigned destination. And as the L.A.P.D. and F.B.I. race to intercept them, Max and Vincent’s survival become dependent on each other, in ways neither would have imagined. |

I have a question on euphemisms used in times of war…?
I am writing a paper on euphemisms used during times of war. An example is "collateral damage" which is a euphemism for killing non-combatants. I want to write on a specific event where a president or a political leader used euphemisms in a speech or bill in a time of war. I want to write about how the euphemisms decieve the common people in some way. If you have any events, speeches, ect that I could research to write on that’d be great!
A euphemism that is quickly gaining acceptance is "obamify." Example: I will run quickly away from the enemy like a cowardly frenchman, I will obamify myself.

The one that springs to my mind is when President Truman announced the dropping of the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima. He called Hiroshima ‘a military target’, but it wasn’t. It was picked because it was the biggest city in Japan that hadn’t been bombed already, so it would provide the best opportunity for damage assessment. Hiroshima did have some small defense industry, but it was located on the edge of town and the bomb was targetted at the city hall, in the center of population.
In the 20th century (maybe before) the word ‘liberation’ has been used with an almost self-conscious irony. Also the word ‘pacify’. A friend of mine who fought in Vietnam said they used to joke: "Let’s pacify them before the pacify us!"

The word ‘non-combatants’ is itself a euphemism for innocent civilians.
